Barbell Guide

A good bar is an essential piece of equipment for strength and conditioning training, but also a tool for self-improvement, smashing PRs (on occasion) and sometimes just a way to take a few moments to yourself. Barbells can take a range of forms and styles, which can be overwhelming when choosing the right barbell needed for your training.

Some people will need a bar purely for lifting weights and some will require a barbell suitable for performing Olympic weightlifting movements, which places different demands on the barbells. There's also a huge difference between a barbell used for home training and one used in a high-use commercial setting, that will required increase maintenance from intense use.

A range of barbells can be found in any CrossFit, weightlifting or home gym, and choosing the right barbell for your needs is the ideal way to set yourself up for success. We offer a range of bars to suit a range of needs, whether large-scale weightlifting classes or a first-time user.

This guide will help you choose the right barbell for your needs, and help you decipher the stats and phrases often found on any bar manufacturer product page.

Tensile Strength

Tensile strength, otherwise known as PSI, refers to the pounds per inch stress the bar can take before it will break or bend. Most weightlifting aficionados are well versed in this subject, but for the uninitiated, 150,000 PSI is the industry standard for a 'fatigue proof' bar, but we rate all of our bars at 209,000 PSI to ensure that they can stand the test of time under heavy use, provided they receive proper ongoing care.

Knurling

Knurling is all about preference, some people prefer an aggressive knurl to help them maintain their grip on the bar, whereas others prefer a softer knurl to allow for a variety of training without so much damage to your hands.

The softer knurl on our Team Bar is ideal for a wide range or training discipines.

Bearings/Bushings

Bearings and bushings affect the spin of the sleeve on the bar, sleeve spin is important when performing Olympic lifts such as the snatch or the clean & jerk. A smooth spin will minimise any excess torque on your hands or wrists whilst moving through the phases of the lift.

Our Team Bar features a combination of steel ball bearings and needle bearings for a smooth spin, whereas the Evolution Bar has ball bearings and steel bushings, allowing us to offer the bar at a lower price point for those starting out with barbells or anyone looking to purchase in bulk.

Finish

We coat our Team and Evolution bars with Zinc for the silver finish (and black zinc on the black Team Bar). The finish helps protect the steel from rusting with proper maintenance. The finish of the barbell has an effect on the feel of the barbell shaft, helping to improve or reduce grip and providing additional rust protection. The different finishes available (zinc, chrome, stainless steel, oxide) do influence the cost of the barbell. Find out more about barbell care here.

Again Faster Barbells

Team Barbell

Our goal with the Again Faster Team Barbell was to design a piece of equipment that matches the performance and quality of other elite-level competition bars while making it durable and affordable enough to be an everyday barbell for any athlete or gym. The result is a strong, smooth, and precise barbell that can take a beating and still perform like a bar that costs three times as much. The Again Faster Team Barbell is ideally suited for benching, squatting, and deadlifting along with Olympic weightlifting movements.

Medium depth knurl gives good grip without tearing up your hands, perfect for anyone undertaking high repetition functional workouts and weightlifting. With a 209,000 PSI and 300KG max load rating, the Again Faster Team Barbell will provide all of the strength you need in your heaviest lifts.

Through our development processes, we have created a seriously versatile barbell that will suit all strength training methods. The microgrooves on the sleeve of the barbell will ensure that loaded plates stay tightly in place during your lifts, and are firmly secured on the barbell by a solid snap-ring lock system.

With a combination of needle and ball bearings in the collars that creates a smooth, reliable spin, while bushings set inside the inner and outer ends of the collar protect those bearings from heavy, repetitive impacts. The whip on this barbell will be a normal level while offering sufficient stiffness for the heavy powerlifting movements.
